Behind The Screens – I5 min read
It was one sunny afternoon when Taka determined that hiding in the shrubs wasn’t any fun with no victim to ambush. He stood up to take one last look around, ensuring the place was empty before he ditched what he thought was a well crafted plan.
A sigh of boredom escaped him as he subconsciously checked his watch. As soon as he realised the time, his face lit up. There was a battle at the Halcyon Fold waiting for him and his mental sluggishness evaporated as he recalled what it felt like to gank noobs. It never gets old, he thought.
“Let’s take a walk down memory lane… but with knives!” he declared to no one in particular, emerging from the bushes with a cardboard box over his head. His feet carried him through the forest like dew in the night when a disturbing realisation hit him. Why did he have to run when he could do somersaults? So, somersault he did, all the way to his lane where he found himself next to his turret. The enemy minions advanced forward and the sight gave him the rush to go into a killing spree, skilfully tumbling over whenever he could.
Had he been less bouncy, he would have noticed a presence behind him. After clearing the minion wave, he turned around and barely avoided hitting his head against a book that… floats? His eyes trailed forward and immediately he was caught in a trance.
Are those antlers? Big pointy ears and eyes glowing like the stars greeted him. “Oh look, you’re here now.” She had the voice of an angel, Taka thought. Although, he had never heard one before.
The woman held his gaze and smiled to herself as she asked, “Do you ever feel like you’re being watched?” Taka lost the ability to think coherently at this and randomly blurted, “I can’t find my keys.”
Gone was the smile she held as she was visibly taken aback by the absurdity of his response and him, in general. She stared him down in an attempt to elicit sense out of him. This does not intimidate Taka at all, however. He took a step forward, albeit fighting an inner battle against his feet that seemed to be moving on their own, and stood boldly before her.
To his surprise, she walked up closer to him. Having recovered from bewilderment, she chose to be rational and ignored his antics. They stood face to face as she assured him, “You’ll be safer with me.”
Was it her voice or the way she said it that made his heart flutter? Taka, on the other hand, hadn’t left the trance. His eyebrows knitted together as he tried to remember her name from the loading screen, scratching his head unknowingly at the same time.
Lyra! He mentally exclaimed just as she raised her eyebrow at him. He thought the inquisitive look on her face was cute and before he could stop himself from being an official idiot, yelled out, “You are adorable!”
Lyra was caught by surprise at the random compliment. Her curiosity grew and she marveled at how she didn’t think he’s weird despite his giddiness. In fact, she was enjoying it and that was a wonder in itself. She settled with flashing him a warm smile in response.
Taka brightened up even more with excitement as he thought of an idea and decided to push his luck. “Blink and I’m gone.” Lyra contemplated if he was serious before she realized that he was showing off. She obliged with a smirk and closed her eyes dramatically, her eyelashes lingering for a bit before she opened them back up to find that he had already disappeared. A genuine smile escaped her as she felt the butterflies warming up her stomach. “What’s next?”
Taka reappeared behind her, feeling bold enough to blow behind her ear. She let out a mild gasp and turned around to find him grinning like a halfwit. “I once tried to juggle four blades on a munion, it didn’t end well for the munion,” Taka wasn’t done yet. She giggled at this and he inwardly patted himself in the back.
Their dallying was halted however when his ears started twitching. He looked further ahead and sensed the approaching enemy team. The rumbling sound of heavy machinery did not sit well with him. He was at the pinnacle of happiness and would rather ogle shamelessly at the beauty next to him than deal with random noobs. The thought of ganking wasn’t as appealing anymore.
Lyra noticed his frustration and reached out to hold his arm. This made him squeak on the inside as he felt himself melting like ice cream under the sun. Catching her gaze, he gave her a toothy smile before another plan formulated in his hyper active mind.
He grabbed her abruptly that she nearly screamed and carried her in his arms. Her body obliged long before her mind could fathom the events. He turned to his right and ran through the bushes towards the deserter’s exit behind the jungle shop.
Lyra was dumbfounded as she started to realize what was going on, “Oh no honey, not that way.” He ignored her and kept his pace until they were safe outside the fold.
He put her down and held her briefly before he placed a finger on her lips. “The best defense is not to be there,” he said. Confusion was written all over her face but so was enjoyment. The adrenaline rush easily swallowed all her logic and Taka took this moment to wrap his arms around her waist and pull her close to him. “At least it’s warm here,” he whispered as his face was inches from hers.
Wide eyes looked up to him, and they were filled with excitement. Taka could swear he saw them sparkle. Her pupils dilated just as her head was filled with haze. Still, in this mess of sappy romantic atmosphere, Lyra realized something familiar, “Hey, those are my line- ”
Taka cut her off as he met her parted lips with his. The taste of her kiss sent him into overdrive. She relaxed in his embrace and put her arms around his neck, pulling him down for more.
Lyra wasn’t one to break the rules but she decided to throw all her rational sense out the window for this moment. “Hmm, whatever.” She muttered as her arcane passage materialized and they teleport into another world.
